Q: Is art therapy only for people with artistic skill?
A:
No. It is not at all necessary to be an artist or to have artistic skill to engage in art therapy and to feel its benefits. Art therapy can benefit anyone who is interested in using creativity and creative media to play with and explore one's intrinsic metaphors and symbolism.
Q: How can art therapy help me be more creative?
A:
By identifying your own internalized symbols and metaphors you can begin to bring them into visual expression. This is the definition of creativity and it's what all artists do in the process of making art. Experimenting with different artistic media, such as collage, clay, or paint, and discovering what you like to work with is part of this process.
Q: What's an art therapy session like?
A:
A session varies tremendously depending on the needs and desires of each individual. But most sessions involve
art-making followed by a verbal exploration of the process of the art-making and the connections that are revealed to the client's emotional life.
Q: What if I don't want to make art in a session and would rather talk?
A:
It is absolutely not required to make art in a session. Art Therapists are trained to do talk therapy as well. Indeed, talking is an important part of the art therapy process whether art making is involved or not.
Q: How do I know if art therapy is right for me?
A:
There is no simple answer to this. If you feel curious about art therapy and feel a desire to develop insight into your emotional life creatively, then art therapy is right for you. Feel free to schedule a free phone consultation to explore this more.
